Effects of Antihypertensive Drug Treatment on the Risk of Dementia and Cognitive Impairment

With the increase in life expectancy, the prevalence of dementia is expected to grow. Midlife hypertension reportedly increases the risk of dementia and cognitive impairment late in life. Prospective cohort studies have shown that treatment with antihypertensive drugs reduces the rate of these disorders, and diuretics were associated with a significantly reduced risk of dementia.
