Methods to Conduct a Disability and Impairment Evaluation by General Practitioners Reviewed

Methods for general practitioners to use when conducting a clinical disability and impairment evaluation are reviewed in the June 15 issue of the American Family Physician. Results of the disability and impairment evaluation should be communicated clearly to nonmedical professionals who determine eligibility and compensation for specific benefits. Whether as the treating clinician, consulting clinician, or independent medical examiner, clinicians are often asked to determine impairment and disability. The clinician's specific role should be clarified with the third party making the request as should specific issues to be addressed. The evaluation may occur in the context of a job application to determine benefits under an entitlement program or for legal proceedings. It may be requested by an employer, benefits administrator, insurer, attorney, or judge.
