Medical News: MRI Findings May Track Risk of Cognitive Impairment in Healthy Seniors - in Geriatrics, General Geriatrics from MedPage Today

Progression of white matter lesions detected with MRI may predict the risk of developing mild cognitive impairment, a possible precursor to Alzheimer's disease or other types of dementia, researchers found. Healthy older individuals with the greatest growth in white matter hyperintensities were most likely to develop persistent cognitive impairment, according to Lisa Silbert, MD, of Oregon Health & Science University in Portland, and colleagues. However, baseline burden of these lesions was not associated with risk of developing problems with cognition, the researchers reported in the July 14 issue of Neurology.
