Medical News: Some Exercise Interventions More Cost-Effective than Others - in Primary Care, Exercise & Fitness from MedPage Today

Exercise programs that use pedometers or the mass media to turn patients on to physical activity may be the most cost-effective strategies in terms of health outcomes, researchers found. Physician referrals to exercise physiologists appear to be the least cost-effective, Linda J. Cobiac, MD, of the University of Queensland in Brisbane, Australia, and colleagues reported online in PLoS Medicine. The findings can help policymakers "identify the most cost-effective approaches to decreasing the burden of disease due to physical inactivity, based on the best available evidence," the researchers said.
