The president wants a public insurance option but isn’t “demanding” one. Harry Reid may put the public option into the Senate bill but will gladly allow an amendment to strip it out. And Nancy Pelosi is trying to figure out whether Blue Dogs will abandon the health care bill in droves if it does have a public option.
With that lack of clarity from the top political leaders in Washington, there’s plenty of openings for Republicans in coming weeks to chip away at any semblance of unity Democrats have on the pivotal issue in the health reform debate.
