It might not attract the millions who watch Survivor, but the televised summit President Obama is hosting Thursday—essentially an unprecedented political reality show—offers Americans a rare chance to watch Washington in raw action as Democratic and Republican leaders duke it out over health care reform.
“The summit is a high-risk proposition for both sides,” says John Rother, AARP’s director of policy. “It’s unscripted. It’s like a gladiatorial combat in the arena of television. It’s really a battle both for public support of reform and for support within Congress, so there’s a lot at stake.”
