Message from Assistant Secretary Kathy Greenlee on the Implementation of the Affordable Care Act

Dear Friends:

This has been an historic time for health care in America.  Just over a month ago, President Obama signed the Affordable Care Act into law. This legislation gives the American people the control over their own health insurance they need and deserve -- by holding insurance companies accountable, bringing down costs and giving all Americans more insurance choices. It also does much to improve the health, quality of life and security for America's seniors and their caregivers.

As we work to implement this legislation, we want to make communicating with you a top priority.  From town hall meetings with President Obama, to webcasts with Secretary Sebelius, the Administration on Aging (AoA), the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) and others, and blog posts on the White House blog, White House and HHS officials are working hard to to answer your questions about this important new law. We plan to highlight various provisions in the legislation that impacts seniors in various ways, including through regular e-news communications.  In the weeks ahead,  we will be expanding our public education campaign and doing more to ensure you have the facts about reform.  We will be sure to share that information with you so that you may disseminate it in your communities and places where seniors and their caregivers live and work.

This recent White House blog details what the Administration has accomplished so far related to implementation of the Affordable Care Act: http://www.whitehouse.gov/blog/2010/04/30/one-month-later-making-health-insurance-reform-a-reality

The Administration on Aging (AoA) is working in partnership with our peer agencies in the Department to prepare to implement the provisions that benefit seniors and to get the word out about these important benefits.  I have participated in two HHS webchats on what health reform means for seniors, and I expect that there will be more to come.  To view those webchats, please visit: http://www.youtube.com/ushealthreform#p/c/E13B55ACDF862D29

We want to make sure the network is aware of the provisions that impact seniors and their caregivers, especially those which have immediate impact such as the steps being taken to close the coverage gap (doughnut hole) in Medicare prescription drug coverage, as well as exciting opportunities on the horizon for the aging network and those you serve.

We look forward to providing more information in the weeks and months to come.

Assistant Secretary for Aging Kathy Greenlee
