My friend Ellen works in an internist’s office where she encounters a procession of older widows. She hears them fret about the high costs and general aggravation of maintaining and paying taxes on the big old houses they still live in. She also hears them confide that it’s lonely to occupy these once-bustling spaces alone. And she wonders why they can’t find some way to live together.

Maybe they can. Maybe a lot of people can.
