What does health reform mean for people in recovery from addiction, consumers of mental health services, and their families? The National Coalition for Mental Health Recovery, Faces & Voices of Recovery, and the National Alliance on Mental Illness jointly present a series of five webinars sponsored by SAMHSA to provide information on the Affordable Care Act (ACA) and its implementation in the states to state-based advocates from the mental health and addiction disorders consumer, recovery, and family communities.

The webinar will give advocates the tools they need to begin interacting effectively with state legislators, administrators, and others charged with development of mechanisms and regulations for implementation of ACA.

After a bruising battle around the federal budget for FY 2011, which resulted in $38 billion in spending cuts and a near shutdown of the government, Congress is now beginning debate on the budget for FY 2012. In the U.S. House of Representatives, Budget Chairman Paul Ryan (R-WI) has developed a budget blueprint that is $6.2 trillion lower than President Barack Obama's plan. The Ryan blueprint includes privatizing Medicare, turning Medicaid into a block grant, and lowering taxes for corporations and the wealthy.
Rep. Jan Schakowsky served on President Obama's National Commission on Fiscal Responsibility and Reform. She opposed the deficit reduction proposal presented by the co-chairs and offered her own approach, which reached the same fiscal goals without cutting Social Security, Medicare or Medicaid. The Schakowsky plan also addressed income disparity – which is at its greatest level since 1928.

White House Disability Group Monthly Conference Call - March 31 - Disability.gov

In order to keep Americans with disabilities and other interested parties informed about the Obama Administration's disability-related efforts, the White House Disability Group is hosting monthly calls to provide updates on issues such as key political appointments, employment, civil rights, health care and transportation, as well as introduce staff who work on disability issues in the federal government.
The next call will be held on Thursday, March 31 at 5:00 PM Eastern Time. It will feature remarks from U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan, and include introductions to other Obama Administration personnel.
