Canes Found Therapeutic in Osteoarthritis - in Meeting Coverage, ACR from MedPage Today

Perhaps the oldest and simplest medical device -- the cane -- corrects abnormal mechanical stresses in the knees of osteoarthritis patients and relieves pain, a researcher said here at the American College of Rheumatology meeting.

Significant reductions in mean peak vertical force were seen in patients who used a cane more than four days a week for two months, and half reported at least a 20% reduction in pain severity, reported Meika Fang, MD, of the Veterans Affairs Greater Los Angeles Healthcare System.
